ADV Films has provided three audio tracks this time for a great tri-lingual release. We have a Japanese Stereo track, an English Stereo track, and a Spanish Stereo track. All audio tracks sound great. No disortions. There was, however, a single drop-out in the English track. In was early in the first episode, it's all I could spot. Two subtitle options are available as well, an English subtitle track, and a Signs Only subtitle track.
VIDEO: A-
The picture looks fairly nice. I believe ADV was able to get the Japanese DVD source material. I didn't notice much artifacting, and I didn't see any bleeding or rainbowing. A very good looking transfer.
PACKAGING: A-
Featuring a nice piece of artwork which runs from the front to the back, Those Who Hunt Elves has a very decent cover. The cover image mainly focuses on Ritsko with her big gun, also featuring Celcia in the background. The spine, as the image continues features Airi, and the back ends the image with a shot of Junpei eating his favorite dish, curry, with his underpants on... A few screen captures are faded onto the sandy background and a good summary is provided. The back also notes the extras and features on the disc, including the fact that the Spanish dub is included, which will sell good for Spanish-speakers. The insert's front has an image of Celcia holding a knife with spell fragments tattooed onto her body, listing the chapter stops. The back of the insert features cover art for the first three VHS volumes. Very nice. The disc itself features Ritsko, and is packaged with a black Scanavo keepcase.
MENUS: A-
ADV has done some really awesome animated menus for this disc. The main menu starts out with a symbol (shown in the beginning of the opening) and it begins to turn, and it becomes the tool Celcia uses to find spell fragments with a selection for which of the six episodes on the disc you'd like to go to. The top of the menu has the gang in their T-74 Tank as the words pass up "Those.... Who... Hunt..." and the animation restarts once the tank crashes into "Elves". Really nice. We also have the usual Scenes, Set-Up, and Extras selections. Selecting an episode on the main menu will do a nice "stripping" animation taking you to that episode. All the other selections do a nice transition of the T-74 Tank firing into the screen.
The scenes menus are done the same way many of ADV discs have them. Five chapter stops for each episode, as clips play for them. The Set-Up menu is done to look like the spell book Celcia uses, spiffy. The Extras menu has a shot of the tank (moving) with the extra selections. Choosing one will lead you into a door-way in the tank.
EXTRAS: B+
The extras are quite minimal, but are quite good. First, a credit-less opening is included. The opening animation is really good, and is funner to watch without the credits overlapping it. The second feature is the image gallery of character sketches and tank designs. Very nice.
CONTENT: B
Those Who Hunt Elves isn't the best series I have seen, but it is very fun and exciting to watch. Basically, three people, Junpei, Airi, and Ritsko (and their T-74 tank), were strangely brought into the Elf world, and away from their home in Japan. The Elf leader, Celcia, has finally been able to find a way to send them back. Since it's in a different language, she must translate it and tattoo it onto her naked body. As she tries to translate the spell, Junpei (these two get into really horrible fights) begins to make fun of Celcia's "old" body. Celcia gets mad and turns around to shut him up. The spell then splits into the sky into five parts. Now, the gang have to try and find the five missing spell fragments, which have been tattooed on five elves, so they can return to their home. A very simple, yet fun, plot.
Since Celcia doesn't want Junpei, Airi, and Ritsko causing trouble by stripping every elf they come across, she decides to disguise herself as a dog to help them (to keep herself from getting a bad reputation), this way, they can find the spell fragments easier without having to strip all the elves. Junpei is a little hisatated to let Celcia help, but then he gets used to it.
Through out the six episodes, we mainly join along as see all the strange incidents they get caught up in. Ending with only one spell fragment, there's room to get the second and final disc. I just haven't had the time or the money though. If you like comedic anime series, you may like this, but if you're offended by TV nudity (nipple-less breasts) then perhaps you should stay away.
