Dragon Ball Z Movie #05: Cooler's Revenge
AUDIO: B+
For this release we get four audio soundtracks. We have two English tracks (5.1 and Stereo/2.0), a Japanese language track (Mono), and a Spanish language track (Mono). The first time I watched the movie on this disc was in Japanese. The Japanese mono track had a great sound transfer. Since the film is only 47 minutes, I decided to repeat the movie with the different languages. So, when I saw it the second time, I had it set to the 5.1 English track. It's a surprise to me that I enjoyed the dub for this movie (and the band music wasn't that bad, a few of the songs even sounded perfect for some scenes...). The sound was great. At times, I'd switch to the 2.0 Stereo track, which had a good transfer as well. Of course, I couldn't stop watching without repeating the movie yet again, switched to the mono Spanish track. As happy as I was to reconize most of original Spanish cast, the transfer for this language track was also well done. There was only a little trouble during the Spanish version of the opening song ("Cha La, Head Cha La") where the volume of the song would seem to have been lowered for a few seconds.
VIDEO: B+
A very nice transfer considering this movie was released in the early 90's (or even the late 80's?). Of course, the entire prolouge scene with Freezer destroying the planet Vejita did not look as well as the rest of the movie, since it was reused animation from the TV episodes. Other than that, the picture was crisp, colors were well presented, and I spotted no bleeding. A little artifacting is visible in some of the darker colors, though.

This is probably one of the more nicer looking covers FUNimation has produced, though, unlike movie 4, they used a screen shot instead of using the original cover (which probably would of been retouched). The screen shot focusing on Cooler is quite nice though. On the back we get a good summary about what's to be expected in this movie along with a few more screen shots. No insert is included, sadly. The disc has a nice image of Cooler (from the cover) placed on it. The case is a standard keepcase from EstaPack (which I find evil, since removing the disc is easy, but I'm frightened that I'll break the disc when I'm trying to place it back inside).
MENUS: A-
The disc starts with the usual FBI Warning, and then the FUNimation logo. Afterwards, the disc plays a three minute trailer for Blue Gender, after the cool trailer, we get taken to the main menu. The menu system is really cool. A little animation as you select the submenus and as you return to the main menu. Finally, the "extras" menu (which were only VHS trailers on other discs) is now called "TRAILERS". The music which plays in the background sound really nice, and it's sad that this background music is not heard in the English version of the movie at all. Selections can be made quickly on these menus. As for the Audio/Subtitles menu, instead of the "English: Subtitles On - Subtitles Off" as they are in the TV discs, here, if you select a language (Japanese for example) and you go down to the subtitles section and switch the subtitles on, the subtitles will be for the translation of the Japanese version. Same goes for selecting the Spanish language, if you switch the subtitles on, you'll get a translation of what's being said in the Spanish version (Spiffy!). Selecting English and switching the subtitles on basically gives you closed captions for the hearing impaired. A note about the subtitles: I've check all three subtitle tracks and all of them seem to be at least one second off (bad timing), though it is not a big deal (watch out, these subtitles seem a little small...).

There are no extras. We do get four trailers in the trailers section (this time, the selection of the trailers were great), though I will not grade these as extras. We get a Yu Yu Hakusho trailer, a Blue Gender trailer (about three minutes long), an IF Labs Prototype commercial (action figures), and a preview for the upcoming "Game Boy Advance" game.
CONTENT: B+
This 47 minute movie is about Freezer's stronger brother, Cooler. After discovering that his brother, Freezer, had been destroyed by a Saiya-Jin named, Gokou, Cooler decides to go to Earth and battle Gokou to retrieve his family's pride.
(SPOILER WARNING)
As the movie begins, we see Bardock, Gokou's father, talking to Freezer. Bardock threatens to kill Freezer, but his attack is no good as Freezer sets off a huge fire ball which destroys them all. Cooler, Freezer's brother, monitors Freezer's actions and calls him "too soft" for letting a Saiya-Jin child get away. After the opening song, we see Gokou training at Muten Roshi's island. Muten Roshi comments on Gokou's growing strength. Gohan studies at home, and his mother, Chichi, brings him something to drink. She sees Hiya Dragon and demands it to leave Gohan alone as he studies. She hears Gokou yelling to Hiya Dragon, also asking it to leave Gohan alone. Chichi suspects Gokou may have gotten less smarter from all his fighting. But, Gokou is only acting like this to hurry Gohan up with his homework, since they will be going camping.
On a distant planet, Cooler learns that his brother has been killed. So, he decides to go to Earth to settle the score, and retrieve his family's pride. As his team of strong fighters interupt a camping trip, it comes to Gokou and Piccolo's shock that Freezer had returned. Thoguh, Gokou and Piccolo are mistaken, as the strong alien reveals himself to be Freezer's brother. After Gokou is injured, his son, Gohan, goes to Korin's place to get some senzu.
As he returns to his father, the beans are destroyed by Salza, one of Cooler's men. Thankfully, Gohan still had one bean hiddin and passes it to his father. Gokou is revived and begins to battle Cooler. After a few minutes of action, Cooler reveals to Gokou that he has one more transformation (he is in his third form at the moment) and he transforms in front of Gokou's eyes. He soon becomes strong, and Gokou finds himself being beat to the ground.
Gokou gets angry, especially after seeing a bird getting hurt. He gets up, and his energy raises higher. He transforms into his Super Saiya-Jin form and attacks Cooler. Cooler gets angry and creates a huge fire ball and aims it towards Gokou and the Earth. Gokou stops it with his hands and pushes it back, sending Cooler into the sun. As Cooler burns, he realizes that it was Gokou who had escaped as a child those years ago, and figures out that he's been "too soft" as well.
The planet is saved, and Gokou awakes to find Gohan, Kurririn, Hiya Dragon, and Oolong. They wonder where Piccolo is, and they suspect Piccolo to pop up unexpectedly. A figure pops up from under a few boulders, but it isn't Piccolo. It's Salza, and he has survived. Though, one of Piccolo's final attacks shoots right through his body, and Salza falls over. Gohan searches for Piccolo and calls out his name. Piccolo drinks from a waterfall and looks to the sky and sighs.
This is one of the more better movies. If you're a Dragon Ball Z fan, you might want to check out this disc. The movie is great, and so is the disc.
